In summer 2023, HuiLongTang Culture & Arts Co., Ltd. brought a magical lantern experience to one of America’s oldest zoos — Franklin Park Zoo in Boston, Massachusetts. This enchanting evening exhibition transformed the historic zoo grounds into a wonderland of light, color, and imagination.
The festival’s central theme celebrated the beauty of nature through three interconnected worlds: a vibrant butterfly garden, an immersive ocean realm, and a mystical forest filled with whimsical creatures. This thoughtful curation allowed visitors to journey through different ecosystems, each brought to life through traditional Chinese lantern craftsmanship.

The experience began with a spectacular Welcome Arch — a flower-bedecked gateway bursting with colorful blossoms in blue, yellow, orange and pink, crowned by a magnificent monarch butterfly. This Instagram-worthy entrance set the tone for the magical journey ahead.
The Butterfly Garden zone featured the festival’s showpiece: a towering illuminated tree adorned with hundreds of brilliantly colored butterflies in red, blue, orange, and green. At the tree’s base, giant white daisies glowed softly with bees hovering among them, creating a scene of harmonious nature that delighted visitors of all ages.
The Ocean Realm transported guests underwater with stunning marine life sculptures. A majestic sea turtle with an intricately patterned purple and turquoise shell appeared to swim through an ethereal underwater landscape. Nearby, a whimsical giant crab with expressive eyes and iridescent claws perched atop a glowing orange gem, surrounded by colorful sea plants.

The Fantasy Forest section showcased our team’s creative versatility. A wise owl with purple-tipped wings and detailed feather patterns stood guard over a storybook scene featuring a whimsical child wizard. Meanwhile, colorful lizards with striped patterns basked on illuminated rocks, their scales glowing in rainbow hues.
This project demonstrated HuiLongTang’s ability to adapt traditional Chinese lantern techniques to American family entertainment contexts. Working with Zoo New England, we created an experience that honored both Eastern artistic traditions and Western zoo education missions — inspiring wonder while fostering appreciation for the natural world.

The festival’s success established a new summer tradition for Boston families and showcased how Chinese lantern art can create meaningful cross-cultural connections.
