PROJECT CASE STUDY – LIGHTOPIA MANCHESTER 2022

PROJECT CASE STUDY – LIGHTOPIA MANCHESTER 2022

In winter 2022, HuiLongTang Culture & Arts Co., Ltd. partnered with Lightopia UK to bring an immersive fantasy lantern experience to Manchester, one of Britain’s most vibrant cultural cities. This groundbreaking festival transformed Heaton Park and surrounding venues into an enchanted world of light and color.

Unlike traditional Chinese lantern festivals, Lightopia represents a bold fusion of Eastern craftsmanship and Western fantasy aesthetics. Our team was tasked with creating a completely original visual language — blending ancient Chinese silk-on-frame techniques with European folklore and contemporary design sensibilities.

The festival entrance set the magical tone immediately: a towering installation featuring the Lightopia logo surrounded by crystalline blocks in rainbow hues, topped by ethereal winged figures. Visitors passed through an illuminated mushroom forest archway, where oversized fantasy fungi in pink, purple, and blue created an Alice-in-Wonderland atmosphere.

One of the most spectacular installations was the Chinese Dragon — reimagined not in traditional red and gold, but in mesmerizing shades of purple, lavender, and iridescent blue. This 15-meter serpentine creature emerged from a crystalline cave installation, its flowing mane and whiskers illuminated by thousands of LED lights. The dragon became the festival’s signature photograph, drawing visitors from across the UK.

The immersive trail continued through themed zones: mystical forests populated by illuminated deer with crystalline antlers, ancient plains featuring majestic bison rendered in warm amber light, and a “Garden of Peace” featuring a serene nature spirit figure surrounded by oversized flowers and glowing crystals.

Particularly innovative was the use of transparent and translucent materials to create layered lighting effects. The polar bear family, set against crystalline ice mountains with snowflake accents, demonstrated how traditional Chinese lantern techniques could be adapted to Arctic themes with stunning results.

Our collaboration extended beyond fabrication to creative consultation. Working closely with British designers, we developed new methods for integrating Western fantasy aesthetics with Chinese lantern traditions — creating a visual language that felt both authentically crafted and distinctly contemporary.

The festival’s success led to multiple return seasons and expansion to other UK cities, establishing Lightopia as one of Britain’s premier winter attractions and demonstrating HuiLongTang’s capability to innovate within the traditional art form.
