Species Selection & Anatomical Study (1–2 weeks) — We start with your species list. Our design team studies reference photographs, anatomical diagrams, and colouration patterns of each animal. What We Have Learned from 100+ Animal Lantern Installations

Every custom animal lantern installation teaches us something we now apply globally.

At a zoo in the United Kingdom, we learned that the placement of animal lanterns near real animal enclosures requires careful consideration. An illuminated tiger lantern placed near the real tiger enclosure initially caused the tigers to pace and vocalise at night. We moved the lantern 20 metres away and reduced the brightness from 100% to 70%, and the behaviour stopped. We now include an animal welfare lighting assessment in every zoo installation — specifying max lux levels, distance minimums, and colour temperatures for displays near sensitive species.

In Australia, we discovered that the native marsupials — koalas, kangaroos, and wallabies — have unique colouration that standard silk dyeing cannot easily replicate. The grey-blue of a koala’s fur, the rust-red of a kangaroo, the sandy-brown of a wallaby — these required custom pigment blends developed specifically for the Australian fauna series. In Japan, we learned that animal lanterns for aquarium installations require different engineering. These details are invisible to the visitor — and that is precisely the point. A well-made custom animal lantern looks effortless because the engineering has already absorbed every environmental variable.

How to Compare Custom Animal Lantern Suppliers

Most venues searching for a custom animal lantern supplier are already comparing more than one quote, and the shortlist usually comes down to two things: whether the maker can reproduce a species accurately, and whether they can get the finished piece to your site intact. Both are visible before you commit, if you know what to ask for.

Species accuracy. Ask for photographs of a completed animal from the same family, shot at night rather than in the workshop. Daylight workshop photos hide the two things that decide how a piece reads after dark: how the internal frame shapes the silhouette, and whether the silk tones stay separate under warm light. A supplier who has built wildlife before will have species colour references on file; one who has only built festival lanterns usually will not.
Design iteration. You should be able to see a 3D visualisation of your animal before production begins, and to revise it. Species proportions are easy to get wrong in the abstract — a young elephant’s head-to-body ratio is nothing like an adult’s, and a zoo audience will notice. Ask how many revision rounds are included before you commit to anything.
Engineering for your site. The same animal needs different engineering on a lawn, at a lake edge and along a walkway. Ask how the supplier handles wind load on tall pieces, how the base is held down on soft ground as opposed to hard paving, and whether the structure can be re-erected at a second venue in a later season.
Modularity and spare parts. A six-metre animal has to travel in a container. Ask how it breaks down, how many crates it needs, and whether individual skin sections can be replaced on site after a season in public hands. Replaceable sections are what separate a display that runs for several seasons from one that is written off after the first.
Freight and export documentation. Ask who prepares the export paperwork, whether the supplier has shipped to your region before, and what the delivery terms are. Freight on oversized illuminated sculpture is not a standard parcel arrangement, and a vendor who has not handled it before will underestimate it.
On-site support. Ask whether installation is carried out by the supplier’s own technicians or by a local crew working from manuals and video guidance. Both are workable — the supplier should be able to tell you which they are proposing, and why it suits your site.

Animal Lanterns by Venue: Zoos, Theme Parks, Gardens and Cities

A custom animal lantern programme is specified differently depending on where it stands. The species list may look similar from one venue to the next, but the engineering, the lighting and the route planning are not.

Zoos and wildlife parks. The reference is the live collection, so species accuracy and animal welfare both matter. Lanterns placed near real enclosures need a lighting assessment — we specify maximum lux levels, minimum distance and colour temperature, because a brightly lit predator lantern twenty metres from the real enclosure changes the animals’ night behaviour. Pairing the trail with daytime keeper talks or a conservation message gives the event a reason to exist beyond photographs.
Theme parks. Programmes here run for several seasons, so the engineering question shifts from “can it be installed” to “can it be stored, re-erected and repaired”. Modular frames, replaceable skin sections and a documented crate list matter more than a one-off spectacle. Interactive and motion-activated animals earn their place here, where repeat visitors need something new each season.
Botanical gardens and estates. A botanical garden carries the strictest site constraints of any venue type. Mature planting, heritage trees and lawns that cannot take heavy machinery all shape what can be built and where. Ground protection, discreet cable routing and low-impact bases matter more than sheer scale, and a trail can be routed along the garden’s existing path network rather than across its beds.
City centres and public squares. Scale and public safety drive the brief. Height, wind loading, anchoring on paving or hard standing, and crowd flow around each piece all have to be resolved before the design is signed off. Large single animals and long processional groups work here because they stay visible across open space.
Malls, atriums and indoor venues. Ceiling height, rigging points and fire regulations set the limits. Indoor animals are usually lighter and smaller, and are often designed to be walked past or through at close range rather than viewed from a distance.

Most programmes mix two or more of these settings across a single season — a zoo with a botanical garden attached, or a theme park that also runs a city-centre trail.
