Span, Clearance and What Goes Underneath

An archway is specified from the road that passes through it, not from the drawing.

Clear height runs 3 to 3.5 metres for a pedestrian entrance, and 4 metres anywhere a service vehicle or emergency access has to pass. That number decides the pillar height, and it is usually the first thing a venue discovers it got wrong.

Span runs 6 to 15 metres. Under about eight metres one span beam works. Above ten, the crown needs two supports or a deeper truss, because the lanterns, the zodiac figures and the light cascade all land on that single member.

Asymmetry is worth settling early. Most sites are not level across the opening, and a gate on a slope needs its pillars at different heights with the arch built to match, rather than a level arch sitting on unequal ground.

The Wrapped Pillar: Structure Inside Fabric

The pillars look like fabric. Inside they are metal columns, 600 to 900 mm square, with the LED runs and the connections mounted on the frame.

The fabric goes on in panels rather than as one wrap, because a single wrap pulls and shows creases exactly where the light hits hardest. Seams land on the pillar corners, where the shadow hides them.

Each pillar carries an access panel at the base, at the back. Driver replacement and connection checks happen from there without taking the fabric off. On a gate that runs six weeks, that is the difference between maintenance and rebuild.

Wind is the real constraint. A fifteen-metre gate is a wall with holes in it, and each pillar needs its own foundation or ballast. The arch is never designed to lean on the building behind it.

The Crown and the Cascade: What Goes on Top

The zodiac figures on the crown are why most clients choose this design, and they are also the heaviest thing up there.

A figure of 1.2 to 2 metres runs 30 to 60 kilos. It mounts on its own sub-frame rather than hanging off the arch, and that sub-frame gets designed at the same time as the arch, because retrofitting it after the span is built means adding metal where there is no room.

The light cascade is a different problem. Strands run 1.5 to 2.5 metres and move in any breeze, so they are anchored at both ends rather than hung free. In an enclosed mall they can hang loose. Outdoors they need a lower fixing rail, or they tangle within a week.
