Peacock Feather Rock Lantern
Animal Lanterns
The peacock's tail is the piece — everything else in the build exists to hold it up and light it.
The tail is a structure, not a decoration
A peacock lantern succeeds or fails on the fan. Built as a flat painted panel it looks like a poster; built as a fan of individual feather elements on an open frame, it produces the layered light and the depth that the real bird has. That is why the fan is designed first and the body is sized to carry it.
Fan diameter decides everything downstream: the body scale, the base footprint, and whether the piece can be free-standing or needs a counterweight.
Open fan or folded
A full open fan is the photograph everyone wants, but it has the largest footprint and the most wind exposure. A half-open fan reads as a bird in display without the full span, which is often the better answer for a corridor or an atrium where space is tight.
Because the fan is built in segments, the same piece can be delivered in either configuration, and in some builds the opening angle is adjustable between seasons.
The rock base and why it helps
A peacock on a rock base does three things at once: it lifts the bird to the height where the fan is best seen, it gives the piece a natural anchor on uneven ground, and it turns a figure into a small scene. On a sloped or landscaped site the rock does the levelling work that would otherwise need engineering.
The rock is built as an open faceted structure rather than a solid volume, so it can be sectioned for transport and lit from inside.
Where peacocks belong
Peacocks are a classic garden and botanical-garden subject, and they are placed where visitors approach from the front — the fan has a front. On a trail, that means an off-axis position at a widening, not a mid-path position where people pass from the side.
Atriums and hotel lobbies also work, because the fan fills vertical space above head height.
