A storybook scene has to be readable by a five-year-old at their own height — which is a different brief from a figure built to be impressive.
Building for a child's eye line
Most lanterns are designed for adult viewing height. A storybook scene is not: it is read by children standing in front of it, which means the key moment of the story has to happen at 90 to 120 centimetres, not at head height. That single decision changes the whole composition.
In this scene the duckling is placed at the front and lower, with the other birds behind and slightly higher, so the child's eye goes to the subject first and the context second.
Narrative over spectacle
A storybook scene is judged on whether the story is legible, not on whether it is spectacular. That means the elements are arranged as a sequence: the odd-one-out moment, the reactions around it, and the setting that explains why. Each element has to be identifiable at a glance, which is why faces and body shapes are simplified rather than detailed.
Where a scene is based on a licensed story, the client provides the artwork reference; where it is a traditional tale, the composition is ours.
Grouping and interaction
Children interact with storybook scenes differently from adults: they walk into them, stand beside the figures, and photograph each other. That means the scene needs floor space in front, a clear photo position, and figures spaced so a child can stand between them without touching the light elements.
Where a scene is set on grass, the base is usually designed low so a child can step up to it safely.
Build and finish
Figures use welded frames with fabric-covered surfaces in flat, clear colours, because storybook illustration relies on colour blocking rather than gradient. Lighting is bright and even rather than dramatic — the scene is meant to be cheerful, not atmospheric.
Outdoor builds use outdoor-rated modules; indoor scenes are common for family zones and atriums.
