A panda in a top hat and brass fittings is a deliberate mix — the panda carries the recognition, the steampunk carriage carries the photo.
What a mixed-style build is for
A straight panda is an animal lantern. A panda with a top hat, brass-toned gears and mechanical trim is a character, and characters are what visitors queue to photograph. That is the entire purpose of this build: not realism, but a photo point that stands out on a trail where every other piece is trying to look natural.
The panda form is kept intact underneath. If the animal shape is lost, the piece stops being a panda in a hat and becomes a machine with panda colouring — which is a different, much weaker idea.
How the steampunk elements are added
The additions are built as separate structure rather than painted on. The hat is its own frame; the trim is a set of shaped elements mounted on the body; the brass tone comes from the surface finish and the light colour, not from applied graphics. That is what allows the piece to hold up at close range, where visitors actually look at it.
Keeping the additions detachable also means the panda can be re-dressed between seasons without rebuilding the body.
Where character builds belong
Character pieces work at close range, so they belong where visitors slow down: a photo spot, a plaza edge, a mid-route widening. They are a poor choice as a distant landmark, because the detail that makes them worth photographing is invisible at 40 metres.
They also suit retail and mall positions particularly well, where the audience is walking at a relaxed pace rather than following a trail.
Build and finish
The body uses a welded internal frame with a fabric-covered surface finished in the panda's black and white. Metal-look trim is built from shaped elements with a metallic finish, and the hat is a separate frame mounted on the head. Lighting is warm on the body and brass-toned on the trim, which is what makes the metal parts read as metal at night.
Outdoor builds use outdoor-rated LED modules and a weather-treated finish; indoor builds omit the weather package.
