An archway that becomes a tunnel: the gate is the entrance and the corridor is the zone — one structure doing both jobs.

Gate and corridor in one build

Most festival routes have a gate, then separately a themed section. This composition merges them: visitors pass under an arch that reads as a landmark from outside, and the moment they are through it they are inside a themed corridor. That removes the dead zone that usually sits between an entrance and the first feature.

The merge only works if the arch span and the corridor width are planned together. Built as two separate orders, the joint is where the illusion breaks.

What hangs from the ceiling

The corridor section is where the theme lives, and it lives overhead — suspended jellyfish and drifting forms at staggered heights, lit from within. This is the marine-theme device that works suspended: jellyfish read from below, and the visitor is looking up for the whole length of the walk.

Heights are staggered on purpose. A single hanging height reads as a row; staggered heights read as depth.

Structure over a public path

An overhead installation over a walking route carries a different engineering brief from a ground-set piece. Nothing can hang within reach, the suspension points have to be either self-supporting or anchored to existing structure, and the whole thing has to be inspectable — a suspension failure over a path is not the same risk as a figure falling in a flowerbed.

Where there is no existing structure to hang from, the arch frame carries its own rigging, which is why the span depth matters.

Theming and re-theming

The arch and the corridor frame are the permanent part; the hanging elements and the light colour are the seasonal part. That split lets a venue run a marine programme in summer and re-dress the same corridor for a different theme in winter without rebuilding the structure.

Outdoor builds use outdoor-rated modules and enclosures; covered atriums can run lighter suspension.
