The design is the gradient
Most installations are made of pieces; a rainbow path is made of transitions. What visitors remember is the change from one colour to the next as they walk, which means the sequence and the spacing matter more than any individual arch. Built as repeated identical arches with different colours, the effect flattens.
The stronger version varies the arch form slightly along the run — width, height or density — so the colour change arrives with a change of shape.
Ground level or overhead
A rainbow path can be built as arches over a walkway or as a field of elements at ground level. Arches give the visitor a sequence they pass through; ground elements give a colour field they walk beside. Arches suit a defined route; ground elements suit an open area where the path is not fixed.
The arch version is usually the better choice for a ticketed route, because it controls the walking line and produces the photograph that a colour field does not.
Colour, spacing and the eye
Colour transitions read as smooth only when the steps are small relative to the viewing distance. Too few arches and the run looks like separate coloured pieces; too many and the installation becomes expensive without looking more impressive. The usual answer is six to eight steps across the visible run.
Lighting is set so each arch is a single colour rather than a mix, because mixed colour reads as white light at a distance.
Structure and installation
Arches are built as modular frames that stack or bolt, so a long run ships economically and assembles without heavy lifting. The frames are designed to be identical where possible, with only the surface colour changing — which is what keeps a long run affordable.
Outdoor builds use outdoor-rated modules; a run that crosses a path needs the arch heights set for clearance and the light elements kept out of reach.
