Golden Koi Paifang Lantern
Animal lanterns · Cultural gate
A golden koi suspended mid-leap through a traditional Chinese paifang gate, set above illuminated waves, cloud scrolls and lotus. A cultural gate piece rather than a figure — it is built to be walked through or stood under.
Animal lanterns·Gateway piece·Built to order

The koi and the gate are two of the most recognisable forms in Chinese festival design, and pairing them does the work of a caption. The fish carries the meaning of progress and surplus, the gate marks a threshold, and together they read as an entrance rather than as an ornament.
Because it is a gate, this piece is usually the first thing a visitor passes through. That makes the structure a walk-through rather than a viewing piece: the span has to clear people comfortably, the frame has to be stable without blocking the route, and the lighting has to work from underneath as well as from the front.
Gate, not figure
A gateway piece is judged from beneath. Lighting, cable routing and the underside of the frame all matter more than they would on a free-standing figure, because visitors spend longer under it than in front of it.
Where it works
Entrance
Trail or market gateway
Sets the theme at the threshold, so everything behind it is already understood before the visitor walks in.
Chinatown
Street or district marker
Works at street scale and reads from a distance, which is what a district marker has to do.
Spring Festival
New Year entry point
Koi and gate carry the seasonal meaning without needing text, which suits a public square.

Frequently Asked Questions
How wide does the gate need to be?
It follows the route. The opening is set so visitors pass through comfortably with room on both sides, and the span is engineered for that width rather than adapted afterwards.
Can the koi be replaced with a different animal?
Yes. The gate structure is the constant and the central form is a build choice. Koi is the most requested because of its meaning, but other animals work in the same opening.
Is it stable without anchoring the route?
The span is carried by the two base plates rather than by fixings in the middle of the walkway. Where the surface allows anchoring, ground fixings are used instead or as well.
How is the underside finished?
The underside is part of the design, not an afterthought. Cable routing is hidden above the span and the lighting is set so the structure reads correctly from below, which is where most visitors see it from.
