Time-Space Portal Lantern Installation for Modern Festival Zones
Most lantern installations describe something that already exists. This one describes something that cannot, which is what makes it work as a centrepiece. A robed figure sits inside a nest of interlocking illuminated rings, tilted on different axes and turning around him like orbits, and the whole assembly is carried on a panel-built plinth in cool blue and violet that reads as a machine rather than a platform. The subject is deliberately split: the figure is traditional silk craft, the rings and the base are not.
It is a time space portal lantern for a festival that wants one installation standing apart from the rest of the route. A theme park places it as the marker for a future or space zone. A city festival uses it to break a run of classical scenes, so the visitor is surprised mid-route. A shopping mall takes it as a New Year centrepiece that does not repeat the animal of the year. Science and technology companies, esports events and product launches use it because the image is about progress rather than tradition, and it photographs well against a night sky.
The rings decide the size. In the standard build the outer ring is roughly 8 m across and the full assembly reaches about 9 m to 10 m at the top of the ring set, with the figure sized to stay readable inside the frame. A smaller version at 5 m to 6 m works in an atrium, and a larger version is possible where the site has the crane access and the base area to support it. The plinth is built from illuminated panels, so it can be reduced in height, widened into a viewing platform, or split so visitors can walk beneath the ring set.
Structurally the piece is a metal ring assembly on a sectional base, skinned for the figure and panelled for the plinth, with commercial-grade LED modules throughout and a control system that can run the rings as separate channels. That last point matters more than it sounds: running the orbital rings on independent channels is what produces the sense of rotation, and it is the difference between an installation that looks alive at night and one that looks like a static sculpture with the lights on. Design, fabrication, shipping and installation are handled by one supplier.

Where This Display Works
Theme Park Future and Space Zones
The installation works as the visual anchor for a zone, giving visitors a landmark to navigate by and a photograph at the end of the path.
City Light Festivals
Placed mid-route, it breaks the rhythm of classical scenes and gives the festival a piece that stands on its own in the programme and in the press images.
Shopping Mall Atriums
A suspended or pedestal version fills a multi-storey void with a single object. The cool palette separates it from the red and gold used elsewhere in a mall at the same time of year.
Science and Technology Events
Product launches, tech campuses and innovation exhibitions use the piece as a stage backdrop. The plinth panels take a brand colour and a logo, and the ring sequence can be timed to a reveal.
Esports and Gaming Venues
The portal image fits competition entrances and fan zones, and the ring lighting runs on DMX so it can be driven from the venue show control.
Night Tours and Observation Decks
Where the view is the product, an installation with a dark sky background and a defined silhouette holds a group at the viewing point before they move on.
Key Features
Independent Orbital Ring Channels
Each ring is lit and controlled as its own channel, which is what creates the impression of motion around the figure. Sequences can be slow and continuous or timed to a show cue.
Traditional Figure, Contemporary Frame
The character inside is built with the same hand-painted fabric method used for our classical figures. Setting that craft inside a machine-built ring assembly is the whole idea, and it is why the piece does not read as a generic sci-fi prop.
Panel-Built Illuminated Plinth
The base is a lit structure rather than a painted box. It carries the ballast, hides the cabling and provides the cold blue light that separates the installation from everything around it.
Engineered Ring Geometry
The rings are metal assemblies calculated for their own weight, wind load and the tilt they are mounted at. Tilt is what makes the composition work visually, and it is also the part that has to be engineered rather than drawn.
Sized for Atrium or Plaza
A time space portal lantern is sized at 5 m to 6 m for indoor voids and 8 m to 10 m for outdoor plazas, with the plinth scalable so the installation can be walked around or walked under.
Sectional for Transport
Rings, figure and plinth break into transport modules with labelled looms. The piece stores between events and re-installs from the same layout drawings.

FAQ
How large is the installation?
A time space portal lantern for an indoor site runs about 5 m to 6 m across, which suits a mall atrium or a hall. Outdoor plaza versions reach roughly 8 m to 10 m, and the plinth scales with them so the piece can be circled by visitors or built with a walk-through gap. Final dimensions are set from your site plan.
Can the figure be a different character?
Yes. The ring assembly is the constant and the figure inside it is a separate build, so the character is chosen to suit the festival. We produce it in the same hand-painted fabric method, with the design drawings and a mock-up approved before fabrication.
Do the rings move?
The rings are static structures, and the sense of rotation comes from running them as independent lighting channels in sequence. That approach avoids moving parts and motors in an outdoor environment while still reading as motion. Where a site specifically wants physical rotation, that is a separate engineering scope.
Can the light sequence match our show?
Yes. The installation runs on DMX512 with a channel per ring, so it can operate standalone on a built-in sequence or be driven from the venue’s show control. Cue points for a reveal or a nightly show are programmed during commissioning.
Can it be installed indoors?
Yes, and the version is common in mall atriums. Indoor installations use a lower ring height, a reduced lighting output and a floor-load check for the plinth. Suspension from a roof structure is possible where the building allows it.
What access is needed for installation?
The ring set is assembled at low level and lifted as a unit, so crane or powered access is needed on the install day. A plaza version normally takes four to six days including commissioning, and an indoor version slightly less where the atrium can be closed.
