Chinese New Year Greeting Gate Lantern with Custom Greeting Text
A Chinese New Year greeting gate does a different job from a decorative arch. It has to say something, in words, to everyone who passes under it, and it has to look like an occasion from a distance. This build is organised around those two requirements. A large circular medallion sits above the roof like a round window and holds a scene inside it, most often a family gathered at home with the fu character at the centre. Below it the gate carries a pavilion roof in glazed blue-green tile, a fu panel over the doorway, couplet banners on either side and a wording board across the base. Two colonnades of red lanterns flank the structure and carry the composition outwards.
The slot that matters commercially on a Chinese New Year greeting gate is the medallion. Because it is a framed opening rather than a painted wall, the scene inside it can be changed to suit the host: a family group, the zodiac animal of the year, a city landmark, a sponsor’s product, or a character from a licensed property. The couplet banners and the wording board are painted to order in the same way, so the gate can greet visitors in Chinese, in English, or in both, and it can carry a name, a date or a campaign line without any change to the structure.
The gate is built to the entrance it stands in front of. Standard builds span 8 m to 20 m wide and stand 7 m to 12 m to the roof ridge, with the medallion diameter set from the span. Where an entrance is narrower, the colonnades are shortened rather than the gate, because the lantern rows are what give the piece its width. Indoor versions reduce to about 6 m to 10 m and drop the outer columns, which is the arrangement used in mall atriums and hotel lobbies.
The structure is a weatherproof internal frame in transportable sections, with hand-painted high-density fabric over a shaped understructure for the roof, figures and panels, and internal low-voltage LED throughout. The wording board is a separately built illuminated element, so wording can be changed between seasons without repainting the gate. Design, fabrication, shipping and installation come from one supplier.

Where This Display Works
City Festival Main Gates
The gate gives a festival an entrance that states the year, the city and the greeting in text, and the wording board makes the change from one season to the next a repaint rather than a rebuild.
Shopping Mall Main Entrances
A mall uses the gate at the doors rather than inside, so the greeting is read by passing traffic before visitors decide to come in. Indoor versions drop the colonnades and reduce height against the ceiling.
Hotel and Resort Entrances
Hospitality versions are usually specified at lower height with warmer lighting. The medallion scene is often adapted to the property, and the couplets carry the seasonal greeting.
Corporate and Civic Forecourts
A headquarters or a civic building uses the gate as its New Year face. The couplets take a corporate greeting or an anniversary line, and the wording board can carry a year number or a campaign message.
Cultural Tourism Districts
Placed at the entrance to a heritage street, the gate marks where the district begins. The medallion scene is adapted to local history or a local landmark rather than a generic family group.
Transport Hubs and Airports
Where thousands of travellers pass a threshold, the gate works as a greeting to arrivals. Reduced-height versions fit concourse voids with the lighting output tuned for the space.
Key Features
Interchangeable Medallion Scene
The circular window is a framed opening, so the scene inside it is replaced rather than repainted. This is what allows one gate structure to serve a family theme one year and a zodiac or city theme the next.
Greeting Text Built as a Separate Element
The wording board at the base and the couplet banners are produced to order. Wording, language, sponsor name and dates are set in the design stage, and a new board can be supplied later without touching the gate.
Lantern Colonnades Carry the Scale
Two rows of red lanterns on posts extend the gate sideways. They are what makes the installation read as a wide entrance rather than a tall object, and they can be shortened where the opening is narrow.
Pavilion Roof as the Silhouette
The glazed tile roof and upturned eaves give the gate a recognisable outline from a distance, which is the part that still reads when the illumination is competing with street lighting.
Lighting Designed for the Threshold
The gate runs on internal low-voltage LED with warm-toned modules for the reds and cooler light on the roof tile. The medallion and the wording board are separately controlled, so the greeting can be emphasised.
Sectional Frame, Ballasted Base
The gate breaks into transport modules, butts together on site and stands on ballasted bases where ground cannot be opened. Colonnade posts use the same system, so nothing is fixed into paving.

FAQ
Can the greeting text be changed to our own wording?
Yes. The wording board and the two couplet banners are painted to order, so the language, the wording and any sponsor or city name are set at design stage. Because the board is a separate illuminated element, it can be replaced in a later season without repainting the gate itself.
What can go inside the circular medallion?
It is a framed opening, so the content is a build rather than a print. A family group is the traditional scene, and zodiac animals, city landmarks, licensed characters and sponsor imagery are all produced the same way. Changing the scene later means building a new insert, not replacing the gate.
How wide does the entrance need to be?
A Chinese New Year greeting gate spans from about 8 m to 20 m, and the colonnades extend it sideways. Where the opening is narrower than the standard build, the colonnade rows are shortened first, because the gate body and the medallion are proportioned to each other and should not be compressed.
Does it need ground anchors?
No. The gate and the colonnade posts stand on ballasted bases and can be installed on paving, tarmac and decking without excavation. Where a site prefers mechanical fixing, the frame accepts standard anchor points and we show them on the drawings.
Can it be used indoors?
Yes. Indoor builds reduce to about 6 m to 10 m, drop the outer colonnade columns and use a lower lighting output. The main checks are ceiling void for the roof ridge and floor loading for the ballast, both of which we confirm before fabrication.
How long does installation take?
A standard gate with colonnades is normally up in four to six days including lighting and a night commissioning session. An indoor version without colonnades takes two to three days. Layout drawings are supplied and we can send a crew or work with a supervised local team.
